Students in Private Colleges

By George Lunt Until recently I have taught technology classes including networking, web programming, web design, and others at a private corporate run college. I prefer not to divulge the name at this time. You’ve probably seen their advertisements on national television, since they have many schools scattered all over the United States. My involvement was with their school situated in the Chicago area. This school was mainly filled with high school graduates from Chicago and its suburbs. I want to tell you about some of the problems I experienced with students at this school. Many of the instructors that I’ve worked with as well as others that I know from similar schools had comparable experiences. The main reason I’m so opposed to our global corporate culture is because it sets man’s primary goal as financial wealth but pretends that it is some common good. This is why the majority of students choose a private college. One of the school’s sales staff convinces them that they’ll make a lot of money upon graduation. They either may have a mild or no interest in what they need to study. Some have no prior skills in their field of choice. They are told they don’t need to know anything, but they’ll be taught every skill needed for their success. They can afford all this education by taking out a government backed financial loan. The college expects its instructors to open the heads of their students and fill them with knowledge. Standardized tests in high schools give the average student the idea that the answer to a question is more important than understanding what the question is about. Students then refuse to be challenged. If the problem takes longer than five minutes to solve, they demand the answer. The words “You gotta give me the answer, cause I’m paying this school thirty-thousand dollars!” seem to echo throughout the halls of private colleges. No instructor has ever withheld an answer to an assignment. Instead the instructor first wants the student to attempt the solution by himself or herself. In so doing, the student develops the most useful part of the educational experience, the problem solving ability. Most of the time the instructor gives helpful hints as the student searches for the answer. Students seem to ignore what they’re expected to learn, but they’re constantly concerned about their grade. It’s nice to have a good grade point average, but it’s even nicer to gain a good grasp of what is being taught. It looks like TV has had a real effect on today’s student. Because TV watching is a passive event, students expect their education to be passive as well. Students want to sit back and watch while their instructor amuses them. So what students really want is an entertainer instead of a teacher. If they were studying quantum physics, the students of today would prefer an instructor like Jay Leno rather than one like Albert Einstein. When dealing with history, politics, or literature it’s easier for an instructor to develop an entertaining approach, but how can one make a programming class fun? Even if the subject of the program is humorous, the actual programming requires some thinking which today’s students were conditioned to avoid. Because students can’t get deeply involved in what their supposed to be learning, they avoid studying and doing their homework as much as possible. In classrooms where computers are available, they use instant messaging to have on line conversations with their friends while the instructor is lecturing. They skip a lot of classes but remain in school so they can graduate and get that high paying job they were promised. To get the students to pass the class, a multiple choice test is given for which they are well rehearsed. Most pass with high marks, but some still fail. If you know anything about education, you know that the majority of learning comes from a person’s own efforts. You must do the studying while the school is there to help you as you evolve from confusion to understanding. A school can issue a degree validating that you’ve indeed learned the principles of your chosen field. In today’s competitive world, it’s very hard to find a job without some sort of degree or certificate. Sometimes the high tuition is worth it, if the expected knowledge is really attained. Are there students going to private colleges that are highly motivated and are excellent learners? Of course there are. I’ve seen students that are every bit as good if not better than MIT students. But they are in the minority. Some of them did not go to US high schools but graduated from schools in countries like India or Poland. American high school graduates are able to master some computer related subjects. Computer and Xbox game playing, instant messaging, email, web surfing, and blogging are their best subjects. Unfortunately, they’re not part of the curriculum. Of the actual subjects taught, about half can do basic HTML and simple networking. Except for the gifted students, virtually no one can really program in any common compiled or scripting language. However, almost everyone passes these classes, sometimes even with high marks. If you plan on starting a career in a computer related field here is some advice. Before going to a private college, ask yourself how much you know about what you intend to study. If you know nothing, then go to the internet and try reading about it and doing some tutorials. If this doesn’t interest you, find something that does. Invest in a good computer or two (if you want to study networking). Get a DSL or Cable internet connection. If you can’t afford broadband or it’s not available in your area, at least, get a dial-up connection. Look into open source software if proprietary software costs too much. I’ve encountered students taking web design who didn’t have a computer or internet connection, so they couldn’t practice what they were taught or do their assignments at home. If you have a hard time learning the basics take some remedial courses at a community college. You might even consider a degree from there. Tuition at community colleges is a lot less than that of private colleges and often they teach the same material. Get certification books in your field of interest and find similar material on the internet. If you study hard enough, you can get certified without any formal training. Certification tests usually cost around one hundred dollars. Make sure you’re really prepared so you don’t waste your money. Sometimes having a certification can land you an entry level job better than a degree from a private college. Remember, if you want to launch an interesting career, there is no easy way to succeed. Creating Woodland Gardens

By Tim Hallinan Instead of trying to impose a garden through extensive pruning and soil conditioning, prepare the site for woodland plants, such ferns, shade loving shrubs and perennials. Plants suited to these conditions will grow and thrive without major site preparation. Limited site manipulation if fine. Lower branches may need to be pruned to allow access into the garden, smaller trees may need to be removed to avoid competition and some organic compost can be added to the site in order to create optimal growing conditions. Woodland gardens, which mimic the forest landscape, have four vertical elements; the canopy layer, the understory, the shrub layer and the ground layer. Try to incorporate each layer into your garden. The canopy layer consists of the tallest trees which provide the shade and dictates what you’ll be able to plant. The type of canopy determines the amount of light reaching the ground. Closed canopies allow little to reach the ground and are created by evergreens and large deciduous trees growing close together. Open canopies, on the other hand, create dappled shade and occur when trees are spaced far apart. The understory layer in made up of the smaller woodland trees such as the flowering dogwood. Viburnums, azaleas and other lower growing woody plants create the shrub layer. Ground layer plants include perennials, ferns and bulbs. The forest landscape changes often so plan accordingly; design your garden giving thought to the seasonal changes in the landscape. In the spring, beneath deciduous trees, quite a bit of sunlight is able reaches the ground through the branches This allows flowering perennials and bulbs to bloom. Though the spring flower display can be stunning, be careful not to plan your woodland garden around these flowers as they will soon disappear and die back to the ground. Include plants with lush foliage which will last through the summer months. As spring progresses and the canopy begins to close, plants such as ferns, mosses and perennials become the focus of the garden as they create a lush green carpet. In the fall, trees such as sugar maple, dogwood and hickory and deciduous shrubs such as viburnum and summersweet provide brilliant, colorful foliage. After their fall display, deciduous plants drop their leaves replenishing the soil with nutrients that has been stored in their foliage. Don’t overlook features such as a plant’s form, colorful berries and interesting bark. It is these features which are treasured through the winter months. Berry producing plants also provide wildlife with food. Many woodland plants can be considered year-round attractions. For example, the dogwood begins the season with flowers and red fruits. After its colorful fall foliage falls to the ground its bark, which flakes with age, provides the garden with interest through the winter. The birch tree’s beautiful form is most noticeable in the winter after it sheds its brilliant yellow leaves. Red twig dogwood is a shrub layer plant which, as the name suggests, has red bark. It stands out wonderfully against the snow and the barren winter landscape. When planning your woodland garden, be sure to include benches and spaces for rest as gardens in the shade provide a pleasant respite from the hot summer sun. Have The Courage To Lose Weight

It is the greatest quality of the mind next to honor.” Does it take courage to lose weight? You bet it does! The question then becomes…..do we have the courage to lose weight? Let’s take a look at some of the weight-loss pitfalls we may need courage to overcome. Although all of these won’t apply to everyone, we need to be aware of these traps. * SIBLING RIVALRY - Do you have a sister that you’re always competing with? Although we love our siblings, we need to realize that our weight loss success may not always get the warmest response! If we finally start exercising and drop that extra 40 lbs., but our sister doesn’t, how will that impact the sibling relationship? All too often our sister will get jealous and react negatively to our success. A snide comment here, a cold shoulder there, and soon we may find ourselves regretting our own success. * GUILT - Yes, we may even feel guilty about our weight loss success! What if we lose that extra weight, but our best friend doesn’t? Similar to ’survivor syndrome’, we might even call this phenomenon ’success syndrome’. Consider the woman who, with her mother, has been battling her weight all her life. This has been a journey of 15-25 years!! Secret of Strategy - Part 1

By Paul Lemberg A step-by-step guide to creating a growth strategy based on your current situation and future possibilities. I’ll bet you think you already have a strategy. And well you may, but strategy as a concept is just like love: much used and little understood. Many businesses (and that includes small entrepreneurs, large corporations, non-profits, community organizations, governments, NGOsthe works) neither know what strategy really is, nor how to get one. And even if you do, in fact, have a strategy-is it the right one? The best one? This is so important-marketing guru Jay Abraham says-and I agree-a superior strategy badly executed will beat a bad strategy well executed, any day. It’s easy to say, “This is big company stuff. We know what we need-why should we do all the extra work.” While a “strategy-less” group of marketing tactics may work well and produce good results, is it taking your business in the best direction? You may be making money, but are you making the most money possible? Could another suite of tactics implementing a superior strategy produce far better results? Which brings me to the point of this two-part article: how to formulate strategy. In the next 1500 words, I’m going to present the first half of a basic system for identifying high-impact strategies in your business. (Just the first half? Yes. While I strive to make this as simple as possible, it still takes a bit of explaining, and editors and readers alike detest long articles!) So Part 2 will finish the outline, and in future articles, I will discuss each system component in finer detail. Let’s begin with a working definition of strategy. Strategy is the guiding principle on which are based a series of interlinked decisions regarding the selection and deployment of resources and tactics, whose purpose is realizing a vision and achieving decisive objectives in a competitive and changing environment. This definition tells us a few things: The purpose of all strategic decisions is achieving your vision and “decisive” or critical-to-purpose objectives. Strategy is about selecting specific resources and tactics to get the desired result. Strategy is not static; it is decisions in a series, and evolves continuously over time. Strategy is broad and all-encompassing. With that in mind, here are the 8 steps to formulating strategy: Set your vision Gather environmental and competitive intelligence Take stock of your organization’s strengths and weaknesses Select your “grand strategy” Establish decisive objectives Rate and rank your “SWOTs” Match your internal and external factors to identify strategic alternatives Select specific strategies for implementation Of course, there is one last step: turning your strategy into tactics and game plans, and execute. We won’t get into that in this article. Step 1. Establish your vision. People complicate the idea of vision. A vision is simply a story describing how you want things to be in the future. Some people can tell these stories easily-they know exactly where they want to be and what it will “look” like. Others need help. The best approach is to answer a series of questions regarding what your organization does, who are it’s clients or beneficiaries, what its impact is, how big it is, where it is, how it operates, when all these things will occur, and so on. As a result of answering these questions, your vision will emerge. Of course, you may already have a vision. If so, now is the time to insure that it is relevant and powerful. The test of a good vision is if it inspires; not only you and your management team, but all of your stakeholders: your partners, employees, clients, investors, vendors, lenders, your community, your government-and perhaps the public at large. A great vision inspires, and it also provides direction. Every action you take should further your vision. If it doesn’t, don’t do it. Step 2. Gather environmental and competitive intelligence. To develop the best strategies you must understand the world outside your organization. Quantify and qualify, not just absolutes, but trends. And importantly-identify changes in the status quo. Key areas for focus include competitors, technology, market size and trends, your clients’ industry health, macroeconomic trends, availability of key resources (people and materials) government regulations and other political considerations, and changes in demographics and psychographics-like customer taste. Devise relevant measures for each of these key external areas. For instance, examine your competitors for revenue, profit and market share growth (or decline), product and service changes, shifts in marketing and sales strategy, changes in geographic distribution, strategic alliances, and major customer announcements. Macroeconomic factors include the obvious such as interest and employment rates and trends, production and consumption statistics, along with finer grained-industry issues such as new home buying-which impacts a wide variety of businesses, or defense spending-which impacts a completely different set of sectors. Step 3. Take stock of your organization’s strengths and weaknesses Now it is time to shine the light on your organization. Examine each functional area looking for strengths and weaknesses. Identify strengths that will help the company realize its vision, and weaknesses that will impede its goals. The following is a starter list of focus areas: Ability to get new prospects (Marketing) Ability to get new clients (Sales) Products and services, both existing and those in R&D. Finance or Money, including cash flow, access to capital, revenues, profits, ROI Leadership, including values and vision alignment, decisive objectives People, including skills inventory, staffing levels, employee loyalty, compensation Other areas to examine include:Client satisfaction Client services Logistics Competitive positioning Unique Client Proposition Management team Administration Step 4: Select your Grand Strategies. This “grand strategy” approach is based upon industry/product revenue growth rates. It is specific to a business unit with one major industry and/or product focus. If your business is more complex, you may repeat the process for each focus sector. First, consider your industry and product sector growth rate. Is it growing or declining? Second, consider your competitive strength within that sector. For this analysis Competitive Strength has two components, the size and trend of your market share, and your organization’s financial strength; specifically either cash flow from operations, or access to capital. To simplify: strong market share + strong finances = strong competitive position. Either strong market share or strong finances = average competitive position. Neither strong market share nor strong finances = weak competitive position. This defines a two-by-three matrix of strategic choices from which to select your grand strategy. The exact choice you make will be dictated by the specifics of your situation: sector strength and competitive strength, along with your stated vision and purpose. Choose from the list which best describes your business: Strong sector, strong competitive position. This means that you are in a growing market, hold a commanding market position, and have cash with which to maneuver. Your strategic choices include: Market strategy to increase demand and sales for existing products and services, in existing and new markets Marketing strategy to increase market penetration for existing products and services and capture greater share. Enhance or extend existing products and services; add-ons, backends, strategic joint ventures. Gain control over distribution - bring external sales inside. Take sales from distributors. Gain control over suppliersAcquisition, merger, or joint-ventures with competitors Develop strategic partnerships to increase distribution, or gain new products. Develop related products and services for existing customer base - backend strategies. Strong sector, average competitive position Here you are in a growing market, but have either a commanding position, but limited cash-or vice versa. The exact choice available to you depend on your situation. You can: Seek underserved niches: move into small, defined and profitable markets. Marketing strategy to increase market penetration for existing products and services and capture greater share. Enhance or extend existing products and services; add-ons, backends, strategic joint ventures Strategic partnerships - seek products/services for existing customers Exploit assets via joint ventures and host-beneficiary relationships Develop related products and services for existing customer base - backend strategies. Increased marketing penetration via distributors and 3rd parties Get more money: raise capital via debt or equity Strong sector, weak competitive position You are in a strong sector, but have relatively small market share, and limited or no cash. Your choices include: Seek underserved niches: move into small, defined and profitable markets. Marketing strategy to increase market penetration for existing products and services and capture greater share. Strategic partnerships - seek products/services for existing customers Develop products and services for existing customer base - backend strategies. Sell your client base to a competitor or cooperator; or reposition your existing products to appeal to new customer types. Sell the product line and use cash to reposition remaining assets Sell the company Weak sector, strong competitive position In this case, you dominate a weak market and have cash to exploit your position. You should: Add related products and services for existing customer base - backend strategies. Add un-related products and services for existing customer base - backend strategies. Add new products and services for new customer base Create joint ventures in unrelated markets Weak sector, average competitive position. You are in a mediocre position in a weak market. Depending on your exact circumstances, you can retreat, use what’s left of your cash to buy your way out with new products, or try to enroll a strong partner. Choices include: Reduce costs however you can. Add related products and services for existing customer base - backend strategies. Add new products and services for new customer base Seek to dominate the smallest definition of your market using low-cost / no-cost strategies. Create strategic partnerships and joint ventures Weak sector, weak competitive position Sorry to say, you are in a bad place. In a word-retreat! You can do this by: Reduce costs however you can. Sell product line Sell company If you don’t want to liquidate, seek to expand your marketing using low-cost / no-cost marketing strategies - but this may be a losing proposition. Also, as above, attempt to create strategic partnerships and joint ventures, but it may be difficult to attract partners to a market with poor fundamentals. At this point you might say, “sell the customers? Sell the company? No way. I’m holding on.” That just isn’t a strategic point of view. Strategy says you can make more money doing something else-so you best start thinking about it. In general, these choices are listed from most attractive to least. Your organization’s best choices will be based on your particular circumstances. By now you have formulated a vision, gathered analyzed your external environment and organization, identified relevant strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, and begun to zero in on a grand strategy. That should keep you busy for a while. In The Secrets of Strategy, Part II, we’ll complete the process. Remember-you don’t need a strategy. Run a search on the top search engines to find the top ten Web sites that need your content and will gladly post your articles. Try Alta Vista at: www.altavista.com or Google at www.google.com. 2. Use this great shortcut to find sites your articles will fit with. Instead of searching for “product marketing” or something that is targeted, use the keyword “business” without the quotations. While it’s easy to walk into your local bar and pick up ANY woman, it’s hard to find one who matches your personality and interests. This is especially true if you want to meet the cultured and sophisticated woman who doesn’t spend her weekends getting drunk. Consider this fact: If you want to find a sophisticated woman you have to places where she’ll be. Sounds easy right? Well if you can’t think of any places, then read below. In this article, I give 6 examples of places where you can find a sophisticated woman. 1- Wine Tasting A great place to find a refined woman is at a wine tasting event. Now if you enjoy tasting different wine and spending a pleasant afternoon in an outdoor environment, then this is a great place to meet women in a relaxed atmosphere. If you’re not familiar with wine tasting events, they are events organized by club or business as a way to get people to judge different wines while being able to meet different people. What’s great about wine-tasting events is you get to enjoy a fun hobby while mingling and engaging different people in conversation. Of course, the alcohol in your system makes it a lot easier to talk to women. 2- Libraries Another *intellectual* place to meet women is at your local public or academic library. While some people go here strictly for research or work, you can still find a good number of women who like browse the stacks and look at different books. As long as you locate a woman who isn’t too preoccupied, you can initiate her in conversations without being too forward. Furthermore, you can engage women in conversations without feeling the pressures of a date. If you want to find a dinner club in your area, simply do a Google search and you should be able to find some interesting options. 4- Charity and Civic Events A great place to meet sophisticated women is at a charity or civic event in your area. At these occasions you’ll find lots of folks banded together for a common cause. But while you’re there to help do good you can also use this opportunity to meet women. Whats great about charity vents is you can easily find women who are interested in making a difference in society. So obviously most of the women here have good hearts and would be great partners. 5- Museums and Art Galleries If you like art and history, your local museum or art gallery provides a great opportunity to meet women in a cultured environment. Since most art galleries or museums have special events or displays, you’ll have a constant supply of different women to approach. The easiest technique to approach women is to find one who is looking at an art piece or display, then make a comment about it. From there you can quickly transition into a conversation about your interests and hobbies. 6- Martini Bars If you like meeting women in a relaxed, but adult atmosphere, you check out your local martini bar. At these places, you’ll find women who fit the 30+ years demographics. In other words, you probably won’t encounter too many teenie-bopper girls. What’s great about martini bars is you can easily mingle and meet women who have a more *adult* like attitude, but still like to have fun and relax. Locating women in your area is easy to do, but still have to know where to go to find ones who are cultured and sophisticated. The finding means, a perfectly healthy person may think they are sick when hearing the results of a common liver blood test. In the study, 106 participants took four grams of Tylenol, equivalent to eight extra-strength Tylenol tablets, each day for two weeks. Some took Tylenol alone, and some took it with an opioid painkiller. Placebo pills were given to 39 others. 40 recent of the people taking acetaminophen had abnormal blood test results which could signal liver damage. Dr. Paul Watkins of the University of North Carolina says, “This was a very surprising finding.” When treating this type of liver problem, doctors are trained to examine what drugs the patient is taking and recommended stopping drugs that may effect the liver. Ironically - acetaminophen is not on that list of suspect drugs - but a number of common prescription drugs are Dr Watkins says the study calls attention to the possibility that some blood tests are ineffective. Researchers recommend not to exceed four grams a day or the equivalent to eight extra-strength Tylenol tablets.
